Mini-course on Geophisics

The second week of April at the Department of Fundamental Mathematics for students EP "Mathematics" was associated with effective work, and not only because of the usual schedule.

A guest speaker from Imperial College London Pavel Berlov delivered mini-course on the theory of geophysics and hydrodynamics for student of 2-4 year of study. The course was consisted of four 1.5 hour lectures and a discussion session.

At the open classes it was a pleasure to see colleagues from the universities of UNN and NNTU.Despite the fact that the course was designed for graduate and postgraduate students having background in solving differential equations, physics and hydrodynamics, the students coped with the program and were impressed by the structure and material of the lectures. Practical tasks helped them to understand the implementation of mathematics theory for solving real-life cases that engineers, meteorologists and other specialists deal with, and as a result, many students became interested in this area of research.

The difficulty of understanding the importance of fundamental education often lies in the fact that the audience is not familiar with the applied aspects of the many mathematics theories and concepts. Therefore, it is so important to combine in the educational programs both courses devoted to the fundamentals and more applied subjects. Based on this principle new Master's programme "Mathematics" in collaboration with the German University of Passau "Computational Mathematics" is opening this September. This programme allows you to get a double-degree diploma both in Fundamental and Computational Mathematics combining both aspects in the framework of two years of study.
